Since 2000, Mary has played a pivotal role in the design and operation of the SLHDP research studies.  She assisted in the development of the protocol and instruments used in the ongoing complications and follow-up studies.  She is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the project, including directly supervising the data collection and project staff, drawing and processing blood samples, and coordinating other measurements.  Mary has given presentations on the methods used in the project, including oral presentations and workshops at the National Aboriginal Diabetes Association Conferences in Winnipeg in 2001 and 2006 and at the National Aboriginal Diabetes Association Conference in Quebec City in 2003.

Mary was born and raised in Sandy Lake First Nation, where she resides presently. Mary graduated from the Nursing Assistant program of Confederation College, Thunder Bay in 1994-95. From 1997-2000 she worked as a Registered Practical Nurse at the Sandy Lake Nursing Station. Her research work in diabetes and its complications is motivated by her clinical experiences with community members who are suffering from this horrible disease.
